Pecan Slabs & Other Interesting Pieces

Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the slab. The descriptions accompanying the photos describe all obvious physical flaws or character features, good and the bad (and the ugly?), such as color, grain patterns, wavy-grain flame figure, pith cracks/checks and drying cracks, etc. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also generally indicated. Note also that these slabs are rough cut with natural edges, and as Pecan, the bark edges are not tight (the bark does come off during drying and handling). The indicated weights (in pounds) are estimates based on the approximate board-foot volume. I do not have the capacity to routinely weigh all of these pieces. Actual weights will be provided when required for determination of shipping costs.

Unfortunately the photos of many of the pieces do not reveal the true beauty and character of these Pecan slabs. In many instances, I was unable to take photos when they were initially sawn and the figure was fresh and most apparent. Most of the slabs included below were photographed after a year of air-drying. The cut surfaces are now darker and the attractive colors and grain patterns have faded due to outside drying and storage. I did wet the surfaces down for the photos and some of the hidden character is revealed. The beautiful grain, figure and color of these Pecan slabs are still present just below the dark surface.

I have not milled any Pecan slabs recently so generally what I have is listed below. If you do not see what you like - please check back later.
Also, I have decided to sell slabs only for local pick-up - shipping out of our area is not worth the trouble.
Thanks, Lloyd

Pecan Slab 1
108"x14 to 26"x1.5"
Approximately 90 lbs.

This would be a nice slab suitable for a long bar top. As shown in the photos, it includes two large areas of prominent, symmetrical heartwood figure and a large limb-crotch with wavy "flame" pattern at one end. It also includes minor heart cracks, an area of included bark, numerous open and frass-filled bug holes, natural bark edges and other classic character features.

This slab has developed significant cracks at each end during drying. These and any other unwanted structural features can be filled and reinforced with black epoxy to make a very interesting table.

Approximately 100 lbs.

This is a very nice straight slab with a large and distinctive crotch at one end. The crotch exhibits a long and wide area of wavy flame figure. As you can see in the photos, it includes a distinctive stripe of dark brown heartwood adjacent to the crotch. This crotch area alone would make a beautiful table.

Pecan Slab 3
103"x15 to 25"x2.5 to 3"
Approximately 150 lbs.

This is an interesting 8 1/2 foot slab suitable for a long coffee table or bar top. It also has a distinctive crotch at one end with a wide area of associated wavy-grain flame figure. There is an area of dark gray surface at one end where it was exposed in the drying stack. This would be removed by planing/sanding during finishing. There are also several prominent "sticker stains" from the drying stack which would be eliminated during planing/sanding.

Pecan Slab 6
60"x16"x3"
Approximately 80 lbs.

This is a nice straight and thick slab that would be suitable for a mantle or a coffee table. As shown in the photos, it displays a swirling heartwood figure with prominent, eye-catching zig-zag figure in the center. That zig-zag appears to be an enclosed juvenile limb sliced thru at an angle when the slab was sawn from the log. The slab appears sound thoughout with only minor checks and no significant drying cracks.

Pecan Slab 7
92"x10 to 20"x3 to 3.5"
Approximately 130 lbs.

This is a great slab that cound be trimmed down to make a dramatic ~7 foot long and 1 foot wide mantlepiece. It includes one large crotch with an elongated, central "flame" figure at one end and a second, smaller limb crotch toward the center of the slab. The prominent, and colorful (strong shades of brown) heartwood figure appears to extend from end-to-end.

The slab also has minor checks and drying cracks, an area of included bark, numerous open and frass-filled bug holes, natural edges and other classic character features. If any of these features are unwanted, they can be filled and reinforced with black epoxy to make a very interesting mantle.
