I have finally acquired additional Black Cherry trees from East Texas and am in the process of milling, processing and listing additional turning blanks. You can expect more over the next few weeks.

Black Cherry

Black Cherry grows in East Texas and I occasionally have access to it. It is a beautiful wood and turns very nicely. You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from my Black Cherry and other "exotic" Texas woods on my companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.

Black Cherry Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 5-1/2" and 6"

I occasionally cut our nicely figured Texas Black Cherry into pen blanks. Those pictured here are typical although my photography leaves something to be desired. The colors are the soft reddish- to pinkish-brown of Cherry heartwood with traces of the creamy to light orange sapwood on some of the blanks. The wood is hard and can be sanded and finished to a beautiful surface. These have been fully-dried in my kiln.

Black Cherry Pen Blanks $3.00 each, no minimum.

Black Cherry BC-190
2" x 2" x 10"
1-1/2 lbs.

This is a nice two-inch end-grain block of our Texas Black Cherry. It appears to be mostly light pinkish-brown heartwood but the heartwood-sapwood boundary is not distinctive. It has a strong and attractive grain pattern.

It was cut from fairly close to the pith of the log and one very thin crack is present along one side (left side, top photo, but too thin to be visible in the photo). That appears to be the very tail-end of a pith-related radial crack that originated outside the limits of this block. I expect it to be quite shallow and would simply reinforce it with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checks or potential flaws.

Black Cherry BC-169
2" x 2" x 10-1/4"
1-3/4 lbs.

This is a very interesting, two-inch end-grain block of Black Cherry. It is also mostly light pinkish-brown heartwood but includes a section of creamy to light orange-colored sapwood on one end. The interesting aspect is the very irregular contact between heartwood and sapwood, especially on the annotated face. The grain pattern is strong and attractive and extends boldly across the sapwood/heartwood contact.

The pith of the log crosses thru the upper one-fourth of the block (both ends are visible at the near end on the bottom photo). There is a small, thin radial crack associated with that pith and visible at each end. There is also a pair of very small and thin bark inclusions near that pith (within that darker-brown patch on the upper face, bottom photo). Other that the above, I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws.

Black Cherry BC-188
3" x 3" x 10-3/8"
3-1/2 lbs.

This is a nice 3" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. The percentage of heartwood vs. sapwood is unclear - perhaps 70% heartwood. The colors are a light pinkish-brown in the heartwood portion and a lighter orange-brown in the sapwood. The grain patterns are very attractive. There is a prominent knot on one edge that will turn off as the block is roughed to round, but that more-complex grain around the knot will likely remain in the rounded form.

This blank was cut well away from the pith of the log. I see no cracks or checks or other significant flaws.

Black Cherry BC-189
3" x 3" x 10"
3-1/2 lbs.

This is another nice 3" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. The percentage of heartwood vs. sapwood is unclear. The colors are generally a light pinkish-brown with some darker browns associated with a large knot in one end and along one edge.

This blank was cut from close to the pith of the log, but I see no pith-related cracks or flaws. There are two short and tight cracks/checks on one side - associated with that knot on the lower end of the annotated face (top photo). One intersects the lower edge of the block and exhibits no visible depth on the end-grain face. I consider these to be minor and just recommend reinforcing with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Black Cherry BC-160
4" x 4" x 14-1/2"
8 lbs.

This is a very nice 4" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. It is approximately 95% heartwood and 5% sapwood, with most of that sapwood confined to the corners where it will turn off. The colors are a light pinkish-brown in the heartwood portion and a creamy to light orange in the sapwood. The grain patterns are very attractive - tight and generally linear in the heartwood and with elongated closure around a secondary limb. Note - the "smudged" sapwood faces are due to a dirty table on my jointer.

This blank was cut well away from the main pith of the log but does include the pith of a secondary limb that formed one half of a small crotch (nearer portion of the annotated face, and the exposed end-grain face, top photo). And yes - there is one very small radial crack related to that secondary pith (so small that it is not visible where it crosses the center of that pith on the annotated face, top photo). There are also several small black lines elsewhere that could be minor cracks/checks - but they are tight with no sign of an open gap or offset. I see no other cracks, checks or other significant flaws.

The colors are a light pinkish-brown in the heartwood portion and a light orange in the sapwood. The grain patterns are very attractive - tight and generally linear in the heartwood and more open and undulating in the sapwood.

This is another very nice 3" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. It is approximately 95% light pinkish-brown heartwood and 5% creamy to light orange colored sapwood. The sapwood is mainly confined to the edges and is very thin on the intermediate face - most, if not all, will turn off as the blank is roughed to round.

This blank was also cut well away from the pith of the log and there are no cracks or checks. There is one open gap on one edge that appears to be due to the "pop-out" of an imbedded juvenile twig. It too will "turn-off" as the block is roughed out.

This is another nice 3" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. It is approximately 85% light pinkish-brown heartwood and 15% creamy to light orange colored sapwood. The sapwood is confined to one edge and portions of the adjacent sides. If turned for the full 3" diameter, most of this sapwood will turn off leaving a fairly uniform vertical stripe on one side of the finished piece. Interesting.

This blank was cut from very close to the pith of the log but I see no cracks or other pith-related flaws.

This is another very nice 3" square end-grain block of Black Cherry. It is approximately 90% light pinkish-brown heartwood and 10% creamy to light orange colored sapwood. The grain pattern in the heartwood is pretty dramatic. That small sapwood portion is confined to one edge and the adjacent sides at the lower end. Again, most of that sapwood will turn off - in this case likely leaving just a small patch on one side at that end.

This blank was cut from very close to the pith of the log and there is a single small, pith-related radial crack on one corner (lower left of annotated face, top photo). I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Bowl blanks - square and half-log blocks

Black Cherry BC-181
~8" x 9" x ~3-1/2"
9-3/4 lbs.

This is a very nice, half-log bowl blank of Texas Black Cherry. It was cut from a portion of a small crotch and includes very pretty small feather figure. The wood is mainly pinkish-brown heartwood but there is a thick section of creamy to light orange sapwood (note - a lot of the sapwood seems to turn a light orange color after a few hours of exposure to air). Darker brown and silvery-gray bark is present on the backside, making this blank suitable for a full-bark, natural-edge bowl as well as a conventional bowl form.

A portion of the pith is present in the upper half of the blank, from a depth of ~1/2 at one end-grain face (bottom photo) to the bottom of that crotch figure on the annotated face. A small, thin radial crack is present in the pith at the end-grain face, and since the photos were taken, several additional thin pith-related cracks have developed. The price reflects the presence of these small cracks. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Black Cherry BC-182
~9" round by ~4 to 5" deep
8 lbs.

This is a very nice but potentially challenging, round-trimmed half-log bowl blank of Texas Black Cherry. It was cut from the area of a triple crotch; however it only includes the major portion of two limbs and a small portion of the third. That dark brown stripe across the annotated face is a deep, linear bark inclusion that marks the ingrown-junction between the two major limbs (top and middle photos). The third limb is on the backside Bottom photo). I have no idea what type of crotch figure might be present within this blank, but it is likely to be complex and attractive.

The primary colors are the reddish-brown of Black Cherry heartwood and creamy to light orange sapwood (note - a lot of the cream-colored sapwood seems to turn a light orange color after a few hours of exposure to air). Darker brown and silvery-gray bark is present on the backside but the presence of the third crotch-limb likely makes it unsuitable for a full-bark, natural-edge bowl.

The pith of the main limb of the log lies at the annotated face on one side (middle photo) and extends across the blank to a depth of ~1" on the opposite side (bottom photo). That pith includes a distinctive radial crack that is small and tight in the subsurface but is quite prominent where exposed at the annotated face. The major "challenge" referred to in the initial description, is the extent and depth of that bark-lined crotch gap that crosses the annotated face. It extends deep into the blank and will likely need to be reinforced with CA glue before and during turning. Another other opportunity for an eye-catching feature in a unique bowl!

Black Cherry BC-183
~8" round by ~2-1/2" deep"

This is a beautiful half-log bowl blank cut from a large crotch of Texas Black Cherry. The crotch grain is strong and includes an absolutely gorgeous flame figure. The blank includes both reddish-brown heartwood and creamy to light-orange sapwood, and has full mossy bark on the back side, making it suitable for either a conventional bowl or a barky natural-edge bowl.

The pith was cut almost completely out of this piece, with only a thin section remaining on the right-hand crotch limb and at the upper end of the left-hand limb (top and middle photos). A small pith-related radial crack is present in that upper portion of the left-hand limb (just left of the annotation). And a set of very thin radial cracks are associated with that right-hand limb (~4 O'clock position relative to the center of the blank). If aiming for a conventional bowl, I would reinforce these with CA glue before and during turning. In a natural-edge bowl form, these will turn-off pretty quickly. I see no other cracks, check or significant flaws.
