Bodark Wood For Sale AKA .. Osage Orange, Bois d'Arc, or Hedgeapple
This is a very common wood in the bottomlands of the nearby Brazos River. It was formerly planted as hedgerows or living fences elsewhere on the prairie and reputed to be: "Horse high, bull strong and hog tight". These same Bodarks later became the durable fence posts that supported the "modern" barbed-wire! Wanting to see how they really worked, we are presently in the process of establishing a Bodark hedgerow around much of our property to replace the present barbed-wire fencing that contains our livestock.
Bodark is a hard wood and results in a beautiful finish. It turns easily on the lathe when green but becomes more of a challenge when it dries.
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. I do not kiln-dry these blanks so they should be considered green or partially air-dried unless otherwise noted.
Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before photographing and listing them on this site.
You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from these "exotic" Texas woods on our companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

Texas Bodark Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 6""
When I have left-over pieces of attractive Bodark, I cut them down into pen blanks. The wood is beautiful and can be finished to a beautiful, high luster. As with Bodark in other sizes, that yellow heartwood will react to sunlight and age by turning first to orange color (the origin of the name "Osage Orange"?) and then to a gorgeous dark golden brown color.

This is a small end-grain block of Texas Bodark. It is all heartwood - a bright golden yellow color with numerous patches of strong, reddish-brown spalt stain on the a major portion of two sides (bottom photo). The spalting patterns are clearly associated with nearby cracks (old cracks that lie outside the block).
I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws.

This is a very nice 1-1/2"-square spindle block of heavily spalted Texas Bodark. It is primarily the golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood that will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. However, it includes a large area of strong red spalt coloring along one edge and both adjacent sides. While such spalting is commonly associated with cracks, I see no related cracks within this block. There is a small bit of decay on the very edge of the spalted area (near edge, upper end, bottom photo). The adjacent wood appears to be quite sound and that area of decay should turn off completely as the block is roughed to round.
I see no other significant flaws.

This is a small, burly 2-1/2" square end-grain block from an old Bodark tree. The wood is primarily the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with moderate red-stain spalting, gently flowing grain pattern and occasional burl buds. There is one area of bark and thin sapwood on one edge. This bark and most of the sapwood will turn-off as the blank is rounded.
The blank appears to be sound with no obvious cracks or other significant flaws.

Bodark B-304
3" x 3" x 12"
3-1/2 lbs.
This is a near-perfect 3" square end-grain block of spalted Bodark. It is primarily golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with a section of mottled red spalting along one edge and side. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. Unfortunately, most of that attractive spalting will turn off as the blank is roughed to round. Please excuse the color variations with the photos. I have had color control problems with a new camera! The top photo shows the true color of this block.
The blank is sound - I see no cracks or other significant flaws.

Bodark B-305
3" x 3" x 12"
3-3/4 lbs.
This is another near-perfect 3" square end-grain block of Texas Bodark. It is primarily golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with a small section of gray (aged) sapwood along a portion of one edge. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. That gray sapwood will turn off completely as the blank is roughed to round.
The blank is basically sound. Two small and very shallow drying checks are present in the outer portion of the heartwood, but these located close to one edge (left side of upper face, bottom photo) and will also turn off as the block is roughed to round. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

This is another near-perfect 3" square end-grain block of spalted Bodark. It is mainly the golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood that will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. The spalting involves a large area of attractive red spalt-staining along one edge and most of one side. Unfortunately, most of that attractive spalting will turn off as the block is roughed to round.
The blank is sound - I see no cracks or other significant flaws. Insignificant "flaws" include three very small and sound knots on one edge and the center of one face (bottom photo). Those two on the edge will turn off completely.

Bodark Lot 260
3" x 3" x 7"
2-1/2 lbs.
This is another very nice, near perfect 3" square end-grain block of Bodark. The wood is primarily the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood that will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. There are several areas of colorful, reddish-brown spalt staining associated with old knots and cracks. Several of these spalted areas will turn off as the block is rounded, but those portions that remain could form very colorful and dramatic features in the finished turning.
The blank appear to be quite sound. Several knots are present but they all appear sound. One of the spalted areas is associated with cracks, and those lay primarily outside the limits of this block. The only portions of those cracks that are within this block are restricted to one corner, and that will turn off as the blank is rounded (lower right corner, bottom photo). I do not consider these to be significant to turning of this blank.
I see no other cracks or significant flaws.

Bodark Lot 276
3" x 3" x 16-1/2"
5-3/4 lbs.
This is a very nice and long 3" square end-grain block of Bodark. The primary color is the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood (that will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight). There are two areas of strong, reddish-brown spalt staining that are associated with old cracks that were mainly located outside the limits of the block. As well as for lathe turning, this block may be suitable as the base for a fairly-long plane. However, as with most of my wood, it is pretty fresh and some drying will probably be required.
The blank is generally sound. The "tail-end" remains of two radial cracks, enhanced by the prominent spalting, are present on the annotated face on one end (top and bottom photos). Judging from the exposure on the end-grain face, the cracks penetrate less than 1/2". Located close to the edge, most would turn off as the blank is roughed to round.
One prominent knot and two tiny knots are present in this block. The larger knot is associated with an single, very thin crack or check (left side, far end, top photo, but that knot and crack/check are not really visible). The tiny knots are at least partially hollow and may require some type of filling. And last, there are two beetle holes as follows: 1) a long and shallow (~2" x 1/4"x 1/8" deep) borer hole on one face (far end, left side, middle photo) that is located just be low the sapwood on one edge and should turn-off immediately, and 2) a small, open, oval hole (top photo, left side within that long dark stripe) that is approximately 1/8" wide and just over 1/4" long. Probing reveals that the hole penetrates straight into the block about 1/2" and then curves toward the near end for another 1/2 to 3/4". It will not simply turn off as the block is rounded and some filling may be in order.
I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

This is a beautiful, highly-figured 3" square end-grain block from an old Bodark tree. The wood is primarily the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with some red-stain spalting. There are several areas of bark and thin sapwood along the edges and two small, "bark-included"(?) holes on one side (left side, bottom photo). Most of those areas of bark will turn-off as the piece is rounded. One of those small holes is bark-lined and appears to be about 1/2" deep; the other is bark-filled and of uncertain depth.
The blank is sound - I see no cracks or major structural flaws.

Bodark B-302
6" x 6" x 12"
15-3/4 lbs.
This is a nice 6" square end-grain block of spalted Texas Bodark, suitable for turning a large vase, hollow form or mortar and pestle. The basic color is the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with several light and one dark reddish-brown zones of spalting. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight. There is a thick strip of light brown sapwood and a very thin strip of bark on one edge. Both sapwood and bark should turn off as the block is roughed to round.
The pith was located just outside the limit of this block and I see no pith-related ring or radial cracks. There are several prominent cracks that are likely drying checks that have penetrated from the outside of the log. One passes from side to side just below one edge (left edge, bottom photo) and should easily turn off as the block is rounded. The other two are located toward the center of the one face (upper face on the bottom photo) and one extends as much as 1-1/2: into the block. These checks will require reinforcing with CA glue before and/or during turning. Note - the price reflects the complications of those cracks. I see no other significant cracks or flaws.

Bodark B-303
5" x 5" x 12"
11-1/4 lbs.
This is another nice large, square end-grain block of spalted Texas Bodark, suitable for turning a large vase, hollow form or mortar and pestle. The basic color is the bright golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with subtle areas and stripes of reddish-brown spalting. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight.
The pith was located well outside the limit of this block but there is one pith-related ring-type crack at one end (near end, top photo). This crack is shallow and appears to be old and stable. I would just reinforce it with thin CA glue before turning. There are also several small and indistinct cracks close to the edge of one face (right edge, upper face, on the bottom photo) that appear to be shallow drying checks. Located close to that edge, these should easily turn off as the block is rounded. I see no other significant cracks or flaws.

Bodark B-300
14" x 12" x 3-1/2"
17 lbs.
This is a very nice slab-type blank of spalted Texas Bodark suitable for a bowl approximately 12" wide and 3" deep. The primary color is a bright golden yellow, typical of Bodark heartwood, but in this case, it includes a elongated patch of deep red spalted wood on the annotated face. The sapwood is a creamy tan. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight.
This blank was cut from an older log and the bark was loose; it has been removed completely. There are also a number of small open and frass-filled borer holes in the sapwood. I see no pith, cracks or other significant flaws in this block.

Bodark B-330
6 x 7 x 2-1/2"
2-1/4 lbs.
This is a small slab blank of Texas Bodark that should be suitable for a 6" bowl. The primary color is a bright golden yellow - typical of Bodark heartwood. The sapwood is a creamy tan. That yellow heartwood will turn to a strong golden brown with age and sunlight.
The blank has nearly full bark on the backside (partially abraded near one end and absent where a side branch was trimmed-off. While it could be turned as natural-edge bowl, but the bark is not tight and keeping it intact during turning will take considerable care (and CA glue!). Also, there are a number of small open and frass-filled beetle holes (and possibly some still-active beetle grubs) in that outer sapwood layer - these may not be desirable in a natural-edge bowl. These will, or can be, turned off in a conventional bowl form.
There is a small crack across the remaining stump of that small side branch on the back side, and an apparent continuation of that crack to the nearby end-grain face (bottom photo). It looks as if that knot and the associated branch-stub will turn off as the blank is roughed to round. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Bodark Lot 297
11" diameter x 2 to 2-1/2" depth
18 lbs.
This is another nice large but fairly shallow half-log bowl blank cut from the area of a major crotch. There is a very nice flame figure that extends across the entire annotated face. The color (at the moment) is the bright golden yellow with strong bands of golden brown - typical of Bodark heartwood. That heartwood will turn to an absolutely beautiful golden brown with age. The bark on the back side is not very tight, making the blank a poor choice for a natural-edge bowl.
I tried to halve this crotch log close to the pith but the two piths lay at such an angle that one pith was removed (right-hand limb) but the other pith (left-hand limb) was left just below the annotated face. One long pith-related radial crack is also present in the left-hand limb. Again, that crack is extremely tight and is mainly visible as a narrow stripe of reddish-brown spalt staining. I would reinforce it with CA glue when turning.
As you can see from the photos, a number of small and thin drying checks have developed in the sapwood and outer heartwood on the end-grain faces. Most of these will turn off completely in conventional bowl form. Any that remain should be reinforced and, if necessary, filled during the rough-out stage. There are also a couple of small borer holes in the sapwood and outer portion of the heartwood.
I see no other significant flaws in this block.

Again, the primary color is a bright golden yellow - typical of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood - that will turn to a strong and beautiful golden brown with age and sunlight.
There is a small patch of what appears to be "included bark" on one corner of the annotated face (top photo). I would reinforce that with thin CA glue before turning. There is also a single borer hole in the sapwood on the back side (bottom photo). It is fairly deep (probes to ~1") and will likely remain in the final bowl form. I would fill it with some type of colorful epoxy/inlace as an eye-catching character feature in the finished bowl. I see no other significant flaws in this block.

There are two small borer holes in the sapwood on the back side (bottom photo) - one on the very edge and one well off-center. The hole on the edge will turn off; the off-center hole is shallow and curves toward the center. It may be present in a tenon on the base but should not interfere with the final bowl form. The pith has been removed, but one long and two short old radial cracks are present in one end of the face. The larger is visible at the cut end where it extends approximately 1-1/2" into the block.
