Pecan Wood For Sale

These pieces are generally from the nearby bottom lands of the Brazos River and from old pecan groves around the area which are steadily being cleared for development as Houston grows (and the Prairie dies). There are a number of nice half-log, crotch and slab pieces available.

Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated.

Note that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.

Please also note that these blanks are cut from logs that range in age from fresh-cut to old and well-seasoned. I do not have a large kiln so, unless noted as kiln-dried, you must assume that all blocks are green to partially air-dried - they are NOT kiln-dried.

You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from these "exotic" Texas woods on my other website, www.prairiesend.com.

Pecan P-385
16"x 17"x 8"
63 lbs.

This is a very nice and very large, rough-cut Texas Pecan bowl blank. I say "rough-cut" because it was too big to cut (or even trim) with my bandsaw and was entirely chainsaw-cut, leaving a rough face and ends. That said .. the wood is sound and very pretty beneath that rough-cut surface and would be ideal for a very large bowl. That 16"-diameter circle on the annotated face does include a bit of bark, so the maximum "clean" bowl dimensions would be about 15" in diameter and 7 to 8" in depth.

The color of this Pecan is primarily a soft pinkish-tinted light brown, for both the heartwood and the sapwood. The sapwood-heartwood boundary is not distinct. It has full bark on the backside and would be suitable for either a conventional or a natural-edge bowl form.

This half-log blank was cut from the log along the line of the pith and most of the pith was removed. A small portion of pith remains just below the face on the lower end of the blank (top of the end-grain face, middle photo). While there were pith-related radial cracks in the log, most were cut out of this half. Those two dark brown lines on the lower end of the annotated face are related to the ends of those nearby cracks. I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws.

Pecan P-386
17"x 16"x 7-8"
66 lbs.

This is another nice, very large, rough-cut Texas Pecan bowl blank. It is the other half of the log that yielded P-385 above. It was also entirely chainsaw-cut, leaving a rough face and ends. The wood is sound and very pretty beneath that rough-cut surface and would be ideal for a very large bowl. That 16"-diameter circle on the annotated face does include a bit of bark, so the maximum "clean" bowl dimensions would be something like 15" in diameter and 7 to 8" in depth.

The color of this Pecan is primarily a soft pinkish-tinted light brown, for both the heartwood and the sapwood. The sapwood-heartwood boundary is not distinct. It has full bark on the backside and would be suitable for either a conventional or a natural-edge bowl form.

This half-log blank was cut from the log close to the pith, but in this half, most of the pith remains. I do see three, thin but distinctive, cracks that radiate out from that pith on one end (end-grain face, middle photo), two of which lie parallel to and 1/2" below, the annotated face. The third extends into the block at an angle of about 90 degrees. That single dark brown line on the annotated face is likely to be the end of another radial crack. Once the blank is mounted on the lathe and roughed to round, you might want to turn-off the upper 1/2" to remove that pith and most of those pith-related cracks. I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws.

Spalted Pecan P-381
~8" diameter x 4" depth
5-1/2 lbs.

This is a beautiful, heavily-spalted, round-trimmed, half-log bowl blank of Texas native Pecan. It is a soft pinkish-tinted light to dark brown base color with a spectacularly complex pattern of black pencil-line spalting. Very nice! It has full, somewhat flakey bark on the back side - theoretically making it suitable for a natural-edge bowl - but keeping the bark intact may be a challenge!

I see no serious cracks or other structural flaws. The pith of the original log is present at a depth of 1/4" to 3/4" below the annotated face, and I do see what may be two or more short, pith-related radial cracks and possibly one or two small ring cracks. But if these are cracks, they are quite tight and difficult to discern within the complex patterns of pencil-line spalting. I would reinforce any of these suspicious, possible cracks with thin CA glue before and during turning. There are also several open and frass-filled borer holes in the outer portion of this blank and more are likely to be encountered when turning. Many people (myself included) consider such natural features to be interesting and attractive in the finished piece.

Please .... note that I describe it as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength; it is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be. Turning this block to achieve a good finish without tearout will require sharp tools and a light touch.

Spalted Pecan P-363
6"x 6"x 3"
3 lbs.

This is another beautiful square bowl blank of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. It is also a soft pinkish-tinted light brown color with a spectacular, complex pattern of reddish-brown to black pencil-line spalting. It was cut from within a crotch section of the log, such that what appear to be the pith of the main log and the pith of at least one secondary limb are present. With the exception of some very tiny (possible) cracks, these pith areas appear quite sound. The real value of the crotch is that you are likely to find a crotch-associated flame or feather figure within the block that would be exposed once the bowl or hollow-form is turned - thus the higher price. What's that old saying - "you pays your money and you takes your chance" :-). There are also two prominent bark inclusions associated with the crotch, each of which includes a small central gap. These too could be interesting in the finished bowl, but should be reinforced with thin CA glue before turning and may warrant filling once the final form is roughed-out.

I see no significant cracks, checks or other obvious flaws. But again .... please note that I describe it as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength; it is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be. Pecan P-343
8-1/2"x 10"x 2-1/2"
70 lbs.

This is another half-log bowl blank in spalted Texas Pecan - the other half of the log section that yielded P-342 above. It appears suitable for a bowl approximately 8" in diameter and 2-1/2 to 3" deep in either conventional or natural-edge bowl form. The colors are an overall striped pattern of spalted light and dark browns with a soft pinkish core in the center. Turned as a natural-edge bowl, that distinctive pink center should form a unique feature in the bottom of the bowl. The difference between heartwood and sapwood is not distinct. This blank also includes a prominent, dark brown strip of included crotch-bark where the two limbs meet, and portions of that bark inclusion will likely remain in some part of the finished bowl. That will also result in an interesting, eye-catching feature.

The log was cut from close to the pith to produce this blank, and was completely removed from the upper half. However, the pith of both the side limb and main trunk are present just below the cut face in the lower half (middle photo). The pith of the side limb includes a single small, tight radial crack that lies just at and beyond the 8" diameter of the likely bowl. It will be removed when the blank is trimmed to round. There are two thin radial cracks in the pith of the main trunk (barely visible in the middle photo) and these should be reinforced with CA glue if a conventional bowl is anticipated. However, both will likely turn-off completely if you go for a natural-edge bowl.

The strip of included bark between the two limbs of the crotch is quite "gappy" and should be reinforced and the small, open areas that remain should be filled (inlace anyone??) before and/or during turning. I see no other cracks, checks or other obvious flaws.

Pecan P-335
11-3/4"x 11-3/4"x 9-3/4"
50 lbs.

This is a very nice, very large, rough-cut block of Texas Pecan. I say "rough-cut" because, being too big for my small sawmill, it was cut and trimmed with a chainsaw. It is sound and very pretty beneath that rough-cut surface, and would be ideal for a large and deep bowl. It is primarily a soft pinkish-tinted, light brown heartwood with a darker brown core in the center. The pith is present within that darker brown core but it is quite sound (no cracking). A fairly thick section of lighter brown sapwood is present outside the heartwood, with a thin section of bark on the edge of one bottom corner. The boundary between that sapwood and the inner heartwood is not very distinctive.

The block was fresh-cut from the larger butt-end of the Pecan log. It is a bit irregular on the bottom side due to a rounded section of sapwood and bark on one edge and a flattened back edge that was part of the original "felling notch". Those remaining bark and notch edges will turn off completely if that end is mounted and turned to be the bottom of the bowl. I see absolutely no cracks, checks or other obvious flaws.

This is another beautiful, end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. It is also a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with a spectacular, complex pattern of strong, dark reddish-brown to black pencil-line spalting. Very nice!

The pith of the log (or a major side limb) passes diagonally thru the lower portion of this block, and there are two prominent, pith-related radial cracks exposed at one end (top photo, lower edge of end-grain face). These cracks do not pass entirely thru the block - they are not present at the exit point of the pith (top photo, center of annotated face). I would reinforce them with CA glue and fill where open with black-colored epoxy. In addition to the cracks, there are a number of oval, black spalt-lined and frass-filled bugholes scattered throughout the block. A bit of thin CA glue will stabilize these and leave you with interesting character features. Clearly these cracks and bugholes have to be considered, but in my opinion, the colors and spalting patterns in this block make it worth the effort.

I see no other obvious flaws. But .... please note that I describe it as "heavily spalted". Spalted Pecan P-394
3" x 3" x 13"
3 lbs.

This is an interesting end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. It is soft tan to grayish-tinted light brown color with numerous, mostly black, spalt-stained beetle holes scattered throughout. The spalting is not the black, pencil-line style as other blocks from this tree, but includes more subtle, broad swaths of grain-crossing, reddish-brown to grayish-brown color changes. Interesting!

The numerous beetle holes in this block are generally small and open, although some are frass-filled and, some lack that distinctive black-stain. There is a also small knot on one edge that includes a roughly rectangular patch of included bark (near end of the top photo; an old crotch of a small branch?). The pith of that knot also includes three small but open radial cracks. Located right on the edge of the block, it looks as if all of that area will turn off as the block is roughed to round.

This block was cut from close to the pith of the log but I see no sign of pith-related cracks. I also see no checking or other obvious structural flaws.

Pecan Lot P-346
3"x 3"x 10"
3-1/2 lbs.

This is another very nice block of spalted Pecan cut from the central portion of a large crotch. A very irregular band of included bark from between the two crotch limbs is present on one side and an adjacent edge. That portion of the "included" bark on the edge will likely turn off completely as the block is rounded; that portion on the side will likely remain and be present on the surface of the finished turning. Since that bark is somewhat gappy and fragile, CA glue for reinforcement and filling is recommended before turning. There is also a strip of normal (exterior) bark is present along the opposite edge. That will also turn off as the block is rounded.

The grain pattern closest to the area of included bark is very complex and beautiful. Elsewhere it is linear to gracefully swirling, and still very attractive. The colors include soft pinkish-tinted light brown with linear to wavy bands of darker brown spalting.

This block was cut from close to the pith of the log but I see no sign of pith-related cracks. I also see no checking or other obvious structural flaws.

Pecan Lot 106
6"x 6"x 7"
9-1/2 lbs.

This is a nice large block of spalted Pecan cut from the area of a major crotch in the Pecan tree. There is a dramatic area of dark brown included-bark and complex grain associated with the crotch. I see no obvious faults. Note - the pink color of the top photo is not real - the colors on the back side (lower photo) are closer to the true colors.

Spalted Pecan P-379
2" x 2" x 7"
3/4 lbs.

This is a beautiful, end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. It is a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with a spectacular, complex pattern of strong, dark reddish-brown to black pencil-line spalting.

There are several bugholes on two sides and one edge (bottom photo, top and left sides, but not really obvious). Most are frass-filled and can/should be reinforced with thin CA glue. Two are open abd might require filling (if you do not like open hole character features), but - as they are located close to one edge, they may well turn off as the block is rounded.

Otherwise, I see no cracks, checks or other obvious flaws. But .... please note that I describe it as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength; it is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be. Turning this block to achieve a good finish without tearout will require sharp tools and a light touch.

This is a beautiful, fairly long end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. It is also a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with a spectacular, complex pattern of strong, dark reddish-brown to black pencil-line spalting.

Pecan Lot P-347
2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 13-1/2"
3 lbs.

This is a very attractive block of spalted Texas native Pecan. The colors include soft pinkish-tinted light brown with wavy bands and stripes of darker brown spalting and numerous small patches of black, pencil-line spalting. A small, thin section of bark remains on a portion of one edge but will turn off as the block is rounded.

This block was cut from close to the pith of the log and I do see one small pith-related crack. That is the smaller, dark brown spalt stripe on the top side, at the near end of the block, on the bottom photo). At that end-grain face, the crack is less than 1/4" deep - I would simply reinforce it with CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checking or obvious structural flaws.

Pecan Lot 325
2"x 2"x 16-3/4"
2-1/4 lbs.

This is a nice 2" square "stick" of end-grain spalted Pecan. It is about 40% Pecan heartwood and 60% sapwood, with a number of "bird-peck" spots scattered throughout and one old, black-stained and open borer hole on one edge - all of which add character to the piece.

There is a small area of what appears to be included bark on the lower portion of the annotated face (top photo). There is a very small "Y"-shaped gap(crack?) in the center of that feature. It is located close to the edge and may turn-off completely as the block is rounded. I see no significant cracks or other structural flaws.
