Oak Slabs & Other Interesting Pieces
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the slab. The descriptions accompanying the photos describe all obvious physical flaws or character features, good and the bad (and the ugly?), such as color, grain patterns, wavy-grain flame figure, pith cracks/checks and drying cracks, etc. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also generally indicated. Note also that these slabs are rough cut with natural edges. The bark edges are frequently not tight (the bark may come off during drying and handling). The indicated weights (in pounds) are estimates based on the approximate board-foot volume. I do not have the capacity to routinely weigh all of these pieces. Actual weights will be provided when required to determination of shipping costs.
Unfortunately the photos of many of the pieces do not reveal the true beauty and character of these Oak slabs. In many instances, I was unable to take photos when they were initially sawn and the features were fresh and most apparent. Most of the slabs included below were photographed after a year of air-drying. The cut surfaces are now darker and the attractive colors and grain patterns have faded due to outside drying and storage. I did wet the surfaces down for the photos and some of the hidden character is revealed. The beautiful grain, far fleck and color of these Oak slabs are still present just below the dark surface.
I have not milled any Oak slabs recently so generally what I have is listed below. If you do not see what you like - please check back later.
Also, I have decided to sell slabs only for local pick-up - shipping out of our area is not worth the trouble.
Thanks, Lloyd

Live Oak Slab 04-1
49"x 13 to 35"x 3-1/4 to 3-3/4"
Approximately 75 lbs.
This is a very nice Live Oak "crotch" slab that would make an interesting table. The flowing grain pattern is very attractive. The slab is basically sound but does have some small cracks associated with the pith in one branching limb. It also has minor radial cracks within that distinctive "bulls-eye" knot. It has nearly full bark on the bottom side and along the two sides.
This slab was cut in 2004 and has been air-drying since that time. I have not tested it, but I expect the moisture content to be on the order of 12 to 15%.

Live Oak Slab 04-2
38"x 4 to 19"x 1-1/4 to 1-1/2"
Approximately 25 lbs.
This is an interesting small Live Oak slab, uncovered when I was shifting lumber and slabs around in the barn. It is essentially a "triple crotch" and appears to have crotch flame figure associated with each branching limb.
It is quite small and relatively thin for a slab (~ 5/4 to 6/4 lumber dimension) so special consideration would be required for table legs, if a small table was intended. It might also make a nice background for a trophy mount or the like.

Live Oak Slab 06-1
40"x 12, 27 and 16"x 2-1/2"
Approximately 85 lbs.
This is a very nice Live Oak "triple crotch" slab that would make a beautiful living room table. The flowing grain pattern is very attractive and the flame pattern between the branching limbs is absolutely dramatic. Those thin dark lines within the two areas of flame figure (top photo) are tight areas of "included bark", the bark of the younger branches that was squeezed together and compressed as the tree grew.
The slab is does have thin individual drying cracks in the central portion of each limb and the main trunk. Those in the branching limbs appear to be confined to the backside, but that one in the main trunk does penetrate the top. These cracks will require some kind of treatment (I would reinforce and fill them with coal-black epoxy).
This slab was cut in June of this year (06) but has been kiln-drying since that time. My meter says that the moisture content is on the order of 12 to 15%.

Live Oak Slab 06-2
40"x 12, 27 and 16"x 2-1/2"
Approximately 85 lbs.
This is another nice Live Oak "triple crotch" slab from the same log as slab 06-1. Another beautiful living room table waiting to be born. The flowing grain pattern is very attractive and the flame pattern between the branching limbs is absolutely dramatic. Those thin dark lines within the two areas of flame figure (top photo) are tight areas of "included bark", the bark between the adjacent branches that was squeezed together and compressed as the tree grew.
The slab is does have thin individual drying cracks in the central portion of the two ends of the main trunk. They appear to be confined to the backside. These cracks will require some kind of treatment. If they are truly confined to be underside of the slab (lower photo) I would simply reinforce them with CA glue. If they penetrate to the upper surface, I would fill them with a coal-black epoxy.

There is a possibility that I have more, either cut into blocks or in the rough log,
so I may be able to meet your specific requirements.
If not - send an email with your requirements and I will put it into my "wood requested by species" files and
see if I can cut it next time I have a log of that species up on the mill.
