Smaller Mesquite Turning Blocks
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.
The weights were measured at the time that the blocks were photographed and sealed. Some drying will occur and the weights are likely to be less by the time that they are delivered. The descriptions accompanying the photos describe all obvious physical flaws or character features, the good and the bad, such as pith cracks, checks, flame figure, birdseye features, etc. I do a lot of turning and when describing these blanks, I look at them as if they were going on my lathe.

Mesquite Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 5-1/2" and 6"
I occasionally cut nicely figured Mesquite into pen blanks. Those pictured here are typical although my photography leaves something to be desired. The colors are the strong reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood with traces of the bright yellow Mesquite sapwood on some of the blanks. The wood is hard and can be sanded and finished to a beautiful, sensually smooth surface.

Mesquite Lot 164
2-1/2"x 2-1/2"x 17"
4-1/4 lbs.
This is a a very nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is strong and linear. Again, the color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite, but narrow area of darker brown spalt staining on one back edge.
There are three shallow depressions on or close to one edge that are the partial remains of old bug holes (left side, top photo). Two will clearly turn off as the block is rounded; one (the larger and deeper) may not be completely removed. I see no cracks or other significant flaws.

The primary color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite heartwood. There is a large and deep area of "wane" along one edge that is filled with dark brown bark atop a thin layer of yellow sapwood. Located on the edge, some of that bark and sapwood will turn off as the block is rounded. But since it is deep, some of the bark will remain unless the diameter is reduced in that area. Note - reinforced with CA glue, Mesquite bark can be a very strong and attractive element in a turning.
I see no cracks or other structural flaws.

There is also a thin strip of sapwood on one edge (also visible on both photos). This sapwood and most of the spalt-staining will turn off as the block is rounded.
I see no cracks or other significant flaws.

Mesquite Lot 155

This is another interesting end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is strong and linear. The color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite, but with a patch of darker brown spalt staining on one side (left side, top photo). There is a small patch of sapwood on one edge that will turn off as the block is rounded. There are also several bugholes in or close to that sapwood that may or may not turn off immediately. You may have to fill the remaining portions of these holes unless you want to preserve them as character features.
There is a long pattern of thin, overlapping cracks on the one side (left side and lower end, top photo). Where exposed at the end, one crack is approximately 3/4" deep, but it quite tight. Some portions will likely remain after the block is rounded - reinforcing is recommended and filling may be required. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

This is another interesting end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is strong and linear. Again, the color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite, but this time there is a large area of darker brown spalt staining on the back and several angular areas of included bark. One of the linear stripes of spalt-darkening ends in a thin, slightly-open ring-type crack. I don't know how this would work out for turning - but it could be interesting.

Mesquite Lot 123

This is a very large, highly-figured end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is strong and attractive with numerous elongated ray flecks crossing the grain (see left side on the top photo). The primary color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite heartwood. There is also some yellow sapwood at one end and along one edge, but these areas are likely to turn off as the block is rounded.
The pith of the log crosses the lower end of this block and one subtle and thin pith-related crack is present on the face (top photo). There is also an area of "pop-out" on the edge at that end - likely due to separation along an old crack. Most if not all of this pith and associated features will turn off as the block is rounded. There is also a bit of a flat edge on one corner - this too will turn off.
And last - there is a small irregular area of included bark on one side (lower face on the bottom photo). This should be reinforced with CA glue before and, if necessary during, turning. It may make an interesting feature in the finished piece. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 87
4"x 4"x 10"
6-1/4 lbs.
This is another nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. There is a thin area of sapwood and bark on the back side. Most of the bark will turn off as the block is rounded.
This block was cut from fairly close to the pith of the log and there are several prominent, pith-related cracks on one edge (lower side, top photo). The major portions of these cracks look as if they will turn off as the block is rounded, but one does extend well into the central portion on one end (that end visible in the bottom photo) and would have to be addressed during turning. It is pretty tight and I would just reinforce it with thin CA glue and fill any open portions with a medium CA (or epoxy). I would also (probably) use this end for the tenon and then "turn away". This is too pretty a piece of wood to reject just for that crack, so I have reduced the price somewhat.
I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Most of the bark will turn off as the block is rounded, but a portion of the bark may be deeper (1/2"?) and reduce the maximum finished diameter somewhat.
There is one thin, shallow and tight crack on one edge of one end (lower side, exposed end, bottom photo). Most of this crack will turn off as the block is rounded; any remaining should be reinforced with thin CA glue. There are also some very minor drying checks on one end (exposed end, top photo). They seem to have no visible depth where they intersect the end of the block - they are very shallow.
I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 64
3"x 3"x 10-1/2"

OK - this one does have some obvious flaws - that is why it is so cheap! The most obvious flaw is the large "pop-out" on one edge (lower photo) - a parting due to an old, now absent ring crack in that area. Centered within that pop-out is a small and thin radial crack that extends the length of the block - end to end. Viewed from the ends, the crack is tight (not open) and extends inward less than 1". The wood adjacent to that crack is darker brown at the pop-out surface but that stain does not appear to penetrate into the wood. I would reinforce the crack with CA glue and turn the piece - it should make an interesting feature in the finished piece. Another small and tight radial crack is present on the bottom portion of the back (lower photo). This is shallow and will turn off during rounding.
The only other flaw is a small, thin but open ring crack in the bottom end that extends approximately 3/4" into the block and 4" up along the face (upper photo). Much of this will turn off during rounding and again - what remains could be readily reinforced, and if necessary filled, with CA glue. I see no other obvious faults.

Mesquite Lot 188
6"x 6"x 3"
4-1/4 lbs.
This is a very nice square block of burly Texas Honey Mesquite. The log from which this piece was cut included a complex, thinly laminated burly grain with numerous ray flecks and a subtle hint of chatoyance. The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a thin strip of yellow sapwood on one edge (upper photo). There is also a strip of bark on that sapwood edge. If you chose to make that annotated face the bottom of a bowl, the sapwood and bark will turn off.
Three small tight cracks are present on opposite edges of the opposite face (lower photo). They are less than 1/2" deep and quite tight. I would simply reinforce with thin CA glue and turn away. I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws.
Note, I mistakenly wax-sealed the end-grain faces before photography so you will have to take my word for it - the grain is very nice. I did turn a bowl from the log that yielded this blank and it "turned-out" to be very nice. I will include an "example" photo in the near future.

This is another nice square block of burly Texas Honey Mesquite. This block is primarily the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood. There is a small area of yellow sapwood and bark on one corner of the backside (middle photo). That sapwood is a bit punky so I would not want it in a finished bowl. Fortunately, all will turn-off if the annotated face is selected to be the top of a conventional bowl form.
There is a large dark patch of "included bark" on one side as well as a single thin crack and one area of crack-related wane on one corner-edge (top photo and close-up on bottom photo). A large area of "wane" is also present on one back edge and corner, with a thin layer of yellow sapwood and the loose remains of dark brown bark. This wane will likely control the orientation of the bowl, making that side the bottom since the barky wane will turn off as the bottom is roughed-out. These are very tight and appear very shallow; the more prominent one, near the end of the block (near end, lower photo), is less than 1/8" deep. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

This is another nice rift-sawn block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is strong and very attractive and there is a lot of very nice Mesquite wood here.
There is an area of sapwood along one edge and corner of the back side (lower photo). There is also a zone of small and tight, widely spaceed radial cracks on the front side (top photo). These are very tight and appear very shallow; the more prominent one, near the end of the block, is less than 1/8" deep. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 108
2-1/2" x 3-7/8" x 10-1/2"

This is a very nice and large quarter-sawn block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is strong and very attractive and there is a lot of very nice Mesquite wood here.
There is a small zone of prominent radial cracks on one corner of the back side (lower photo). There is also a short alignment of very tight cracks on one side of the block. I consider these to be minor. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 22
2-1/2"x 3"x 16"
4 lbs.
This is a long "skinny" slab of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain and color are very nice and the condition is nearly perfect. There is a small shallow "pop-out"on one edge (lower photo) which resulted from separation along an old ring crack. A small portion of that ring crack remains (left end of the "pop-out in the photo), but dies out quickly. I see no other obvious flaws.
Those "ripply" surfaces (lower photo) are due to cuts with my chain-saw mill.
