"Foreign" Woods For Sale
Ok, ok, so these mostly aren't "foreign" woods... at least no more so than the other
wood that we sell. But these turning blocks, or the trees from which we harvested them, are not native to Texas. This list includes trees such as Chinese Elm, Crepe Myrtle, Arizona Ash and the like that are commonly imported to this area for landscape use. These also include some wood that has been harvested from Louisiana following the Hurricanes of 2005. Such trees are only occasionally available to us so this listing may be short. In addition, I do have a limited amount of truly "foreign" woods such as African Mahogany which is available in turning blocks.
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.
You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from these "foreign" woods on my companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

Black Walnut bowl blanks
8" x 8" x 2"
~3lbs.
I have a number of 2-inch thick Black Walnut blocks cut to 8-inch squares. These are primarily heartwood with Walnut's rich, dark chocolate brown color. In some pieces, such as the example pictured on the left, traces of light brown sapwood are present on one or more edges. These blanks are free of cracks or other structural flaws and will make very nice shallow bowls.

Chinese Elm Lot 1
9" diameter x 4" depth
12 lbs.
A very nice half-log piece of Chinese Elm. This block has sapwood and bark on the sides and back and would be suitable for a natural-edge bowl.
The log was halved along the pith and a portion is present in this section, and it does have a minor pattern of radial pith cracks which will reguire stabilizing when turning.

Chinese Elm Lot 9
7" diameter x 3" depth
6 lbs.
This is a very nice small, half-log piece of Chinese Elm. While it is not a full crotch piece, the grain pattern is somewhat complex and attractive around several secondary branches. The colors are strong and bright.
The log was halved diagonally thru the pith and a portion is present in the lower half of this section (see cut end on upper photo). I do not see any pith-related radial cracks or other structural flaws.
This would make a nice shallow conventional bowl - but is not suitable for a natural-edge bowl due to my inadvertent wax-sealing of the barky back side as well as the ends and cut face!

Chinese Elm Lot 11
>8" diameter x ~5" depth

This is a very nice half-log piece of Chinese Elm. It has sapwood and bark on the sides and back and would normally be suitable for a natural-edge bowl. However, it is not suitable due to my inadvertent wax-sealing of the barky back side as well as the ends and cut face! It will make a fantastic conventional bowl.
The log was halved close to the pith and a portion is present at one end of this section (lower face, top photo). There is a minor pattern of thin, shallow radial pith cracks which will reguire stabilizing when turning. I do not see any additional cracks or other structural flaws.

Chinese Elm Lot 16
10" diameter x ~1-1/2" depth
8 lbs.
This is a very nice Chinese Elm crotch piece. A beautiful feather/flame figure extends across the entire face between the two diverging limbs. The colors are strong and bright. This would make a nice shallow conventional bowl - but is not suitable for a natural-edge bowl due to my inadvertent wax-sealing of the barky back side as well as the ends and cut face! One additional limitation is a shallow depression in the back side. That depression will limit the depth and restrict the final form to a very shallow bowl or deep platter.
The log was halved approximately along the multiple piths; portions of pith are present at shallow depths. These portions of pith are sound but do contain two thin and tight pith-related crack (lower left side and upper right side of the cut face, top photo). These can be readily reinforced, and filled if necessary, with CA glue. I do not see any additional cracks or other structural flaws.

Crepe Myrtle spindle blanks
1-1/2 to 4" in diameter and 10 to 14" long
Weights = ~ 1 lb. (the smaller ones) to 3 lbs. (the larger ones)
I get occasional calls for small diameter Crepe Myrtle so I have cut some limb pieces into short spindle blanks. The wood is hard but fairly bland and very light colored. Among other uses, they may be good for finials and icicles in Christmas ornaments - in high contrast with a darker wood in the ornament globe. Note, these are green wood, not kiln-dried or even air-dried. They have been carefully sealed on the ends with hot-dip wax.

Crepe Myrtle Lot 101

This is another relatively long blank of Crepe Myrtle. However, it does have a long radial crack on the backside that would interfere with bowl turning. The wood is hard but fairly bland and very light colored. It would be suitable for high contrast element with a darker wood in a segmented turned piece. It would also be suitable for resawing into pen blanks.

Louisiana Osage Orange (?) Lot 101
9"x11"x4"
8 lbs.
This is a large solid blank of what appears to be Osage Orange. It was a victim of Hurricane Katrina and was recovered from Louisiana after the storm The wood is bright yellow when fresh-cut but turns to a golden brown with time (see the fresh-cut yellow face versis the golden-brown area which is a shallow depression of "aged" wood). This wood is easy to turn when green but becomes very hard when dry - typical of Osage Orange. This piece does have two radial cracks at one end which will require attention when turning.
