Texas Ebony Wood For Sale

I have begun cutting, hauling and selling Texas Ebony wood from deep south Texas. This beautiful wood is hard and very dense, and reportedly oily or waxy (although I haven't noticed that so far). References suggest that it machines and turns very well, and finishes to a high natural luster, and I can certainly confirm that - have a look at some of the finished Texas Ebony turnings at my Prairie's End Woodshop. Weighing approximately 63 pound per cubic foot, it is heavier than water (i.e. - it will not float in water).

The colors of Texas Ebony heartwood range from a dark chocolate brown (almost coal black) to a dark brown with thin stripes of lighter brown. This banded and somewhat swirling pattern of light brown streaks in the dark matrix resembles cream poured into coffee. When this very dark wood spalts, linear inter-grain areas turn to a light orange-brown, and (rarely) includes small closed, orange-brown circles (spots). The sapwood is a bright golden yellow color, an attractive contrast to the heartwood. I generally water-dampen the surface before taking photos, to suggest what each piece might look like once a finish is applied. As you can see in the example turned vase below, the bark of fresh Texas Ebony is tight and excellent for natural-edge turning.

Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.

Please note - the wood that I presently have is fresh and green - it is not kiln-dried or yet air-dried - so it may not be suitable for turned boxes or any other form that involves precision-fitting parts (unless you employ "green-wood turning techniques or plan on drying them yourself). Each block is sealed on the end-grain faces (and sometimes on all cut surfaces) to reduce drying and possible cracking of the wood during storage and shipment. That "waxy" surface you see in some photos (taken after sealing the blank) is just that - a wax emulsion - not an oily Ebony surface.

You can see examples of various bowls and vessels that I have turned from these "exotic" Texas woods on our companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

Texas Ebony Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 6""

I have recently cut and dried a number of Texas Ebony pen blanks. The wood is beautiful and can be finished to a beautiful, high luster.

These blanks include a mix of Ebony colors and patterns that ranges from the full dark Chocolate brown of the heartwood to a combination of dark brown heartwood and the bright golden yellow of sapwood, and some include the intergrain bands and the numerous "spots" of dark brown to orange areas of spalted heartwood. If you have a preference, please let me know when you place your order, otherwise you will get a "run-of-the-mill" mix.

Texas Ebony Pen Blanks $4.00 each, no minimum.

Texas Ebony Lot 632
3-1/2" x 12-1/2" x 1-1/2"
3 lbs.

This is a very nice rectangular block of Texas Ebony. It is composed primarily of dark-chocolate brown to near black heartwood with a strong, linear and tight grain pattern. It does include a fairly thick strip of golden-yellow sapwood on one edge and the two adjacent sides.

I see no major cracks or other significant flaws. However, there are a couple of very small and tight drying checks on one end-grain face that I failed to fully trim-off prior to the photography (these are too small to be visible in the photos). One of these checks is visible where it intersects an adjacent face (the annotated face, upper end, top photo). It extends 3/8" into the block at that point so it is possible that this check will reduce the useable length of the block by 1/2" or so. The price listed below reflects that flaw.

Texas Ebony Lot 571

This is a very attractive rectangular block of quarter-sawn Texas Ebony. It is primarily heartwood with a strong linear grain pattern. That heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with numerous thin to thick, intra-grain laminations of a light-brown "coffee-cream" color. There is a thick wedge of dark brown bark atop a thin section of creamy-yellow sapwood on one corner (bottom photo).

There are two small circular patches of decayed wood near one end of the block (far end, bottom photo). One is directly on the right edge of the block in that photo and the other is on the left face, close to the edge. They appear to represent decay of a small imbedded juvenile branch that passes thru the block at that point. The wood around that branch is quite sound. There is another, even smaller imbedded twig on the edge nearby - it does not appear to have decayed. The price below reflects the presence of that decayed branch, although I would simply reinforce it with thin epoxy or CA glue and let it be a feature of the finished work. I see no cracks, drying checks or other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 573

This is a very attractive rectangular block of plain-sawn Texas Ebony. It is all Texas Ebony heartwood with a strong linear to swirling grain pattern. The colors include the usual (for this tree) beautiful dark chocolate brown and laminated "coffee-cream" light-brown, but also includes a light reddish shading on one half that is related to spalt-staining (right side, bottom photo).

There are also two small, imbedded juvenile twigs visible on the annotated face (top photo) - one toward the center within the circular grain pattern and one smaller on the upper edge on the end-grain face (barely visible on the top photo). Both of these appear to be sound. There is also a single, very small and tight crack along a portion of the right edge of the annotated face (marked by my small arrows on the top photo). It is not evident in the nearby side of this blank and I expect it to be quite shallow - a minor feature. I see no other cracks, drying checks or significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 575

This is another very attractive rectangular block of quarter-sawn Texas Ebony. There is a thick wedge of creamy-yellow sapwood on one corner capped by a thin strip of dark brown bark (bottom photo).

There is a single small and very tight drying check in one end of the block - passing thru the corner of the sapwood section and angling deeper toward the left side (as viewed on the end-grain face) at right angle to the grain. That crack is also annotated with my arrows on the end-grain and nearer end of the block in the top photo, but they are hard to see due to light reflection on the wood. I consider this check to be a minor flaw that can be readily secured with thin CA glue. I see no other cracks, drying checks or significant flaws.

This is another very nice end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is all Texas Ebony heartwood that was cut from within a large crotch but well away from any pith. It is highly figured with a swirling pattern around nearby limbs of the crotch and beautiful colors that range from a chocolate brown to intra-grain bands of golden brown to coffee-cream.

There is one small and tight crack or check on one edge (left edge, top photo, marked with an arrow). This flaw appears shallow and, being confined to the edge, should turn-off as the block is roughed to round on the lathe. I see no other cracks, checks or structural flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 589
2"x 2"x 7-1/2"
1-3/4 lbs.

This is another nice end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is essentially all dark brown Texas Ebony heartwood with only a tiny strip of yellow sapwood on one edge.

Several small cracks were present in the original log when I cut this block and I was able to avoid all but two. One however, just grazed the side at one end (left side, top photo and close-up photo, marked with a circled area plus arrows) and a second just "nicked" one corner (second and third photos - as marked with arrows). All of those minor cracks lie on the outer portions of the block and should turn off as it is roughed-out. However, there is one small and tight drying check on one end that will not turn off (marked with an arrow on the close-up photo at the bottom). I would reinforce that thin check with thin CA glue before turning. The price of this block reflects the presence of those minor cracks and checks. I see no other cracks, checks or structural flaws.

This is another very nice ~3" end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 95% heartwood and 5% sapwood with a strong linear grain pattern. It appears to have been cut from close to a crotch, as that grain includes a large portion of flame-figure on one end (upper end, bottom photo). The heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with numerous intra-grain laminations of a "coffee-cream" color. There is a bit of reddish spalt-staining of the heartwood within that flame-figure area (upper right-hand corner, top photo). The sapwood is an attractive golden-yellow. Confined to corners/edges, all of the sapwood and spalt-stained heartwood will turn off if the block is mounted for spindle turning.

The block was cut well away from the pith and I see no pith-related cracks. There is a single, very small drying check in the sapwood that does not penetrate the nearby heartwood. That check should also turn off completely as the blank is roughed to round.

This is another very nice ~3" end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 99% heartwood and 1% sapwood with a strong linear grain pattern. The heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with intra-grain laminations of lighter brown to "coffee-cream" color. There is a patch of reddish spalt-staining of the heartwood in the near-pith area (upper left-hand edge, top photo). Located on that edge, most if not all of that spalt-stained heartwood will turn off if the block is mounted for spindle turning.

The block was cut well away from the pith and I see no pith-related cracks. There is a zone of small, overlapping drying checks on edge that I marked with arrows on the bottom photo (left edge, both top and side faces). These checks appear to be very shallow and should also turn off as the blank is roughed to round. An additional check, marked with an arrow, is present one end of the block (bottom photo). It is short (~1-1/2") on that one side and shallow (~1/4") where exposed on the end-grain face. I do not consider these checks to be significant flaws to the block and would just reinforce them with thin CA glue before turning.

Texas Ebony Lot 563

This is another 2" end-grain block of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 80% heartwood and 20% sapwood/bark with a strong linear grain pattern. The heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with numerous thin to thick, intra-grain laminations of a "coffee-cream" color. The sapwood, confined to one edge of the blank, is an attractive golden-yellow with a small section of dark brown bark. A cylinder turned from this blank will be nearly all heartwood with a tapering strip of sapwood near one end.

I see no major flaws, but there is one small, apparent drying check that extends thru the sapwood and into the heartwood. It is present in the end-grain face at one end (top photo, sapwood corner) but is too small and tight to be visible in that photo, and I cannot say how far it extends into the block below the sapwood strip. I would rough-out the block to round and then reinforce any remaining portion of the check with thin CA glue before proceeding with the final turning. The price reflects the uncertainty of that deeper drying check.

Texas Ebony Lot 625
3"x 3"x 15-3/4"
5-3/4 lbs.

This is a nice 3" end-grain block of Texas Ebony. It is primarily dark-chocolate brown to near black heartwood but includes a thick section (~30%) of golden-yellow sapwood on one side and two sections of brown bark atop the sapwood.

The block is free of any true cracks. Note, that pretty blue stripe on the left side of the upper face (middle photo) is not some kind of crack but water "puddled" that is along a minor ridge caused by a nick in my jointer blades! However, since cutting and photographing this block, I see that I failed to fully trim-off some very small drying checks on the top end. These are tiny, very tight, and visible only on the end-grain face (that is at the annotated end, but not visible in the photo). Since there is no evidence of equivalent checking on the adjacent sides, I am confident that the checks are very shallow.

There is one small hole, surrounded by a larger, jagged depression located on one edge (close-up, bottom photo). The hole is from a nail that I encountered when doing the final trimming on this blank (woops!). The jagged depression is what I had to chop-out to get vice-grips on and remove that nail! The nail was short (~1/2") and, being located on that edge, all should turn-off as the block is roughed to round. There is also one open beetle "escape hole" in the left side of the sapwood on the annotated face (top photo). Probing suggests that it is near vertical and extends thru the sapwood to a depth of at least 7/8". Some filling may be required here.

I see no other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 608

This is a pretty nice 3" end-grain block of Texas Ebony. It is essentially all a beautiful dark chocolate-brown heartwood with a strong, linear grain pattern. The only sapwood present is confined to two edges of one face (top photo) and all will turn off as the block is roughed to round. With a basic grain pattern lying at approximately 90 degrees to two opposite sides, this block could also be resawn to produce quarter-sawn lumber. Note, for the initial photos the block was dampened to reflect the appearance of the wood when finish has been applied; that close-up photo on the bottom was taken when the wood was dry, thus the light chocolate-brown color.

There are several tight cracks (or checks??) in one end (two are noted on that end-grain face, bottom photo, but are difficult to see even on the close-up photo). These are long on the end-grain face but are generally not evident on the adjacent sides, suggesting that they are quite shallow. There is also one larger, open and spalted-stained crack in one side of that end-grain face and adjacent side (noted on the close-up photo). That crack extends along the block for a distance of approximately 3-1/2", and into the block to a depth of 3/4". But, being located very close to the edge, most if not all of the crack will turn off completely as the block is roughed to round on the lathe. This is a beautiful and near perfect, small 3" end-grain section of spalted Texas Ebony heartwood. It was cut from a large crotch and includes a complex grain pattern. The colors of the heartwood are very dark brown to a lighter, reddish-brown, with a large area of yellowish-brown and numerous intra-grain stripes of "coffee-cream" deeper into the block - a very attractive blend of color. Also, as with other blocks from this portion of the tree, the gently curving linear grain pattern is overlain by a dark brown to black pattern of undulating, frequently grain-mimicking, pencil-line spalting - again, very pretty stuff.

The block was cut from close to the pith but I see no significant cracks. There are several very small, cracks one edge (right edge, both photos) that appear to be the tail ends of small, pith-related radial cracks. It looks as if all of those small flaws will turn off. Texas Ebony Lot 487
3"x 3"x 12"
5-1/4 lbs.

This is another beautiful and near perfect 3" end-grain section of spalted Texas Ebony. It is approximately 80% light to dark brown heartwood and 20% golden yellow sapwood. As with many others, the colors of the heartwood are very dark brown close to the sapwood and a lighter, reddish- to golden-brown color deeper into the block. But in this piece, there are also two thick stripes of dark brown within the lighter brown section - very attractive. Also, as with other blocks from this portion of the tree, the gently curving linear grain pattern is overlain by a dark brown to black pattern of undulating, frequently grain-mimicking, pencil-line spalting - very pretty stuff.

That section of the golden-yellow sapwood is restricted to one side of one end of the block, most of which will turn off as it is rounded. The remaining portion should form a nice contrasting color at one end of the finished piece.

The block was cut well away from the pith and I see no significant cracks. There is one very small crack close to one corner (bottom photo, top right corner); most if not all of this will turn off and the tail-end, if any remain, should be reinforced with CA glue. The only real flaw that I recognize is the presence of an approximately 3/8th inch-thick phloem layer at the outer edge of the sapwood on that one end (that extends 1-3/8 inchs from that end). If you choose to turn this off, that end of the block will be reduced to an approximate maximum diameter of 2-1/4 inches.

This is a small rough-turned bowl from some of the same Texas Ebony listed on this site. I included this so that you can see another example of how nice the dark brown Ebony heartwood and the bright golden yellow look together. Remember, this is not a "finished" bowl - the surface is still rough and the walls are very thick (to be thinned and finished after the bowl has dried).

For some of you "picky" turners - yes, the upper rim is not flat. I deliberately left it as an undulating surface that has potential for an interesting carved rim in the final bowl. And yes, that is an area of severe spalting on the far side of the rim - I plan on working that into the final shape.

Additional examples of Mesquite turnings are (or will be) presented on our companion website Prairie's End Woodshop.

Square blocks, Half-log and slab-type bowl blanks

Texas Ebony Lot 605
8-1/2" x 9" x 2"
8 lbs.

This is a nice small slab-type bowl blank in Texas Ebony. It should yield a shallow bowl of up to 8 inches in diameter. The larger heartwood portion is a solid dark, almost black, chocolate brown. The golden-yellow sapwood will make a nice contrast with the dark heartwood. It has full bark on the backside so it would be suitable for a barky, natural-edge bowl as well as a conventional bowl form.

I do see two potential flaws that should be considered before turning. These are both cracks, as follows:
- A single thin and tight crack extends across the face. It is not visible at either end-grain surface and appears to be very shallow - likely the very tail-end of a radial crack from deeper within the log. I would reinforce it with CA glue and, if turning a conventional bowl form, anticipate that it will essentially disappear as the center of the bowl is hollowed.
- A prominent "crease" in the sapwood and bark on one end (end-grain face, top photo) terminates in another crack. That crack is visible both on the end-grain surface and the top face, and appears to extend into the blank as much as 1". Again - reinforce and fill this crack with CA glue and you can probably turn a nice conventional bowl, but that crack will be present and visible unless the diameter is reduced to less than the full 8" diameter.

I believe that I would reverse the blank and go for a natural-edge bowl form, with full bark if I could keep it on (again, lots of CA glue!). That would result in both cracks being turned-off as the bottom is formed and the crease becoming an interesting feature on the rim of the bowl. I see no other cracks, check of visible flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 606
10" x 10" x 2-3"
9-1/2 lbs.

This is another nice small slab-type Texas Ebony bowl blank cut from a crotch. It should yield a shallow bowl of up to 9 inches in diameter. Again, the larger heartwood portion is a solid dark, almost black, chocolate brown and that golden-yellow sapwood will make a nice contrast with the dark heartwood. It has full bark on the backside so it would be suitable for a barky, natural-edge bowl as well as a conventional bowl form.

The only flaws that I see are associated with the annotated face (top photo). They are:
- several small, thin and likely very shallow segments of cracks that are too small to see on the photo. These are not structurally significant and could be reinforced with thin CA glue and likely be quite stable.
- one open hole of unknown origin to the left of center. It is oval, about 1/2" by 1/4" and my probing suggests that it is something like 3/4" deep. In a conventional bowl form, this will probably turn-out as the bowl is hollowed.
- several areas of heavy red spalting - crack-related and possibly punky wood, located near the top of the crotch (upper edge on the top photo and the top and end-grain faces on the close-up bottom photo).

That last flaw is the weak point in this blank, I do not know how well this heavily-spalted wood will hold up in the side of a conventional bowl. If I were turning this, I would reverse the blank and go for a natural-edge bowl form, with full bark if I could keep it on (again, lots of CA glue!). That should result in all cracks, the hole and the heavily spalted wood being turned-off as the bottom is formed. It also should display whatever crotch-grain pattern is present in it's most favorable light.

I see no other cracks, check of visible flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 585
~8 diameter by 4" depth
8-1/2 lbs.

This is a half-log style bowl blank cut from a crotch of Texas Ebony. Rough-cut it to round, at just under 8 inches in diameter and 4 inches thick, it should make a very nice bowl. The larger heartwood portion is a beautiful, dark, chocolate brown with numerous thin to thick intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" color. That thick section of golden-yellow sapwood on one side will make a nice contrast with the dark heartwood in a finished bowl. The grain pattern visible on the sides of the blank is highly-figured and very attractive.

While this is a beautiful piece of Texas Ebony, I do see several challenges to turning a bowl. These include:

1) The presence of two prominent and two thin drying checks present in the sapwood and underlying heartwood, and one smaller and quite tight check in the heartwood. Those larger checks (indicated by the arrows on the lower two photos) are the main challenges since, while thin and tight in the heartwood, they do extend to depths of 1-1/2 and 2 inches into the blank where exposed on the sides. While most of these checks will turn off as the bottom of a full-depth bowl is shaped, they will have to be considered when planning the final bowl form. That consideration will likely include:
a) turning a shallower bowl form (perhaps 3" deep?),
b) turning a "pedestal bowl" form, or
c) turning a full-depth bowl, reinforcing and filling the remaining tail-end portions of the checks in the lower sides.

2) While I was able to cut this blank well clear of the main pith of the log, I was unable to avoid the pith of the secondary limb of the crotch (on the side, top two photos). That pith is pretty tight, but does include one small radial crack. I would reinforce the pith area with thin CA glue before turning and then plan on filling any remaining portion of the radial crack in the final turning stages.

3) The presence of a small open crack on one edge of the upper face - visible on the lower right-hand edge on the top photo (~4:00 position). If you elect to turn-off this feature, rather than to try to stabilize and fill, the maximum bowl diameter will likely be about 7 inches.

Please note - the price has been reduced to reflect these features that may challenge your turning of this beautiful piece of Texas Ebony. There are several additional, minor flaws that are present in the lower portion of the blank, including a small pocket of imbedded bark on the bottom, a small imbedded branch on the side (below the pith area) and several open bugholes in the sapwood. All of these should turn off as the bottom of the bowl is roughed-out.

Texas Ebony Lot 536
6"x 6"x 3"
4-1/2 lbs.

This is an absolutely beautiful 3 inch-thick Texas Ebony square blank suitable for a bowl or hollow-form. It is primarily tight-grained Texas Ebony heartwood with a small section of sapwood on one edge and an area of wane (an area of missing bark) atop the sapwood. Note that the small portion of bark in the photos "popped-off" after the photos were taken. The heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with numerous thin to thick, intra-grain laminations and areas of "coffee-cream"-color. The grain forms a gorgeous, complex pattern that swirls around a nearby side limb.

As with others in this series, the presence and shape of that sapwood and bark will likely dictate the orientation of the blank if a bowl form is planned. In that case, the annotated face would be the bottom of the bowl and all of that area of wane and most of the sapwood will turn off. That will also display that beautiful grain and color pattern to its best effect in the bottom of the bowl.

I see no cracks, drying checks or other structural flaws. There is a single open borer hole in the sapwood (lower left corner, bottom photo, but not really visible). That hole will turn completely off as the bowl is roughed to round.

The heartwood is a beautiful chocolate brown with numerous thin to thick, intra-grain laminations and areas of "coffee-cream"-color that undulate gracefully across the block.

Unlike the other blocks in this series - if a bowl form is planned - the presence and shape of that sapwood will not dictate the orientation of the blank. Most if not all of the sapwood would lie outside the bowl and be removed, and any portion that remained would simply constitute an eye-catching and attractive feature.

Texas Ebony Lot 439
7-1/4" x 8" x 2 to 3"
4 lbs.

This is a beautiful half-log blank cut from a small Texas Ebony crotch log. It is fairly thin at the upper end so it is suitable only for a shallow bowl of up to 7" in diameter. The heartwood is a dark, chocolate brown with thin to thick intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" color - this in a strong linear grain pattern with a large area of crotch-related "flame figure". The sapwood is a light brown to yellow with faint blue-gray shading and areas of black pencil line spalting.

All of the bark on the backside is gone, so it would not be suitable for a "full bark" natural-edge piece. There also are a number of large and distinctive borer holes in the sapwood so if much sapwood is included in the finished piece, you will have to decide how to handle them (infilled, or left open for "character", etc).

Note- since my initial listing of this blank, significant drying checks have developed in the sapwood side. It is now less suitable for bowl turning but still valuable for other purposes such as resawing for segmented turning, bottle stoppers, pen blanks, knife scales and the like. The price has been reduced to reflect that condition.

There are also several thin, gaps in the grain pattern (annotated on the enlarged versions of the top and middle photos). These appear to be bark-lined and may be small, thin zones of included bark. The ones visible on the outside of the block are on the back and one side, and will turn off for a conventional bowl form. If similar features remain in the finished bowl form, I would consider filling them with CA glue or colored epoxy.

I see no cracks or other structural flaws. There is a large gap on one corner where a bit of complex grain was broken off during sawing. That gap will turn off as the block is initially trimmed or turned to round.
